Understanding the challenge
Corruption often flourishes in environments where information is fragmented, inaccessible, or difficult to understand.
In Uzbekistan, valuable information about companies, ownership structures, government activity, and allegations of misconduct existed across numerous disconnected sources. While researchers and investigators could often piece together elements of these stories, much of the information remained difficult for the public to access or interpret.
Professor Kris Laslett and his team wanted to change that.
Alongside a searchable business intelligence portal, they needed a public-facing platform capable of turning evidence into compelling stories that could inform public debate, support accountability, and bring greater visibility to ongoing investigations.
Designing for a wider audience
Unlike the Corporate Spotlight platform, which was designed primarily for researchers, journalists, and investigators, UzInvestigations needed to reach a much broader audience.
The platform had to be accessible to readers with little or no prior knowledge of corporate structures, political networks, or anti-corruption investigations.
Our goal was therefore simplicity.
We designed the site around editorial content, ensuring investigations remained the primary focus. Clear navigation, structured article layouts, and strong content hierarchy helped readers focus on the stories themselves rather than the technology behind them.
The result was a platform that balanced journalistic credibility with public accessibility.Creating a home for investigative reporting
The platform was designed to function as a dedicated publishing environment for exposés, research findings, and investigative journalism.
Articles often connected businesses, individuals, and institutions through publicly available information, allegations, press reports, and original research. Given the complexity of many investigations, it was important that the platform supported long-form storytelling while remaining easy to navigate.
By providing a consistent structure for publishing and organising content, the site helped create a growing archive of investigations that could be referenced, shared, and revisited over time.
This transformed individual articles into a broader body of work focused on transparency and accountability.Supporting a wider anti-corruption ecosystem
The project formed part of a larger initiative aimed at improving access to information and supporting investigative work in Uzbekistan.
While the associated data portal focused on helping specialists search, analyse, and connect information, the publishing platform focused on communicating findings to wider audiences.
Together, the two products served complementary purposes.
One helped uncover patterns and relationships. The other helped explain their significance.
This combination strengthened the overall impact of the initiative and helped bridge the gap between research and public understanding.
Technical implementation
The platform was built using WordPress, providing a flexible and familiar content management system for the editorial team.
Ease of publishing was a key requirement. Journalists and researchers needed to be able to quickly create, edit, and publish investigations without requiring technical support.
The resulting platform provided a reliable and scalable foundation capable of supporting ongoing investigative work while remaining simple to manage.Outcome and impact
UzInvestigations created a dedicated home for investigative reporting focused on corruption, accountability, and public transparency.
By making complex investigations easier to publish and easier to understand, the platform helped ensure important stories could reach broader audiences and contribute to public debate.
Most importantly, it demonstrated how digital publishing platforms can support investigative journalism by turning fragmented information into narratives that inform, challenge, and hold power to account.
