Making organisations across London more responsible for their environmental impact.

Cross River Partnership needed a simple and accessible way to help businesses understand how their transport choices affected air quality across London. We designed and built an interactive emissions tool that turned complex environmental data into real-time insights, helping users explore practical ways to reduce their environmental impact.

Encouraging sustainable transport decisions

Understanding the challenge

Poor air quality remains one of the largest environmental risks to public health in the UK, particularly within dense urban areas like London. While businesses and individuals contribute significantly to transport-related emissions, they can also play an important role in reducing them.

Cross River Partnership wanted to create a tool that could help businesses better understand the impact of their transport decisions and encourage more sustainable behaviours. The challenge was making highly technical environmental data understandable and engaging for everyday users.

The platform needed to feel approachable, educational, and easy to experiment with rather than overwhelming or overly scientific.

Turning complex data into an interactive experience

The project was built around data from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ Emissions Factors Toolkit. While the source material was comprehensive, it existed primarily as large spreadsheets and lookup tables that were difficult for non-specialists to interpret or interact with.

Working alongside air quality specialists at Tranquil City, we helped translate this information into a structured system that could power a modern interactive web application.

A key product decision was making every calculation update in real time. Users could instantly see how changes to vehicle types, journey timing, or transport choices affected emissions outputs without needing to submit forms or reload pages. This made the tool feel far more exploratory and educational, helping reinforce the relationship between everyday decisions and environmental outcomes.

Designing for accessibility and behavioural change

The platform intentionally prioritised clarity and usability over technical complexity.

Environmental topics can often feel abstract or inaccessible, particularly when discussing emissions data or particulate matter. We designed the interface to feel lightweight, friendly, and approachable, helping users engage with information they might otherwise ignore.

Alongside the core calculations, the tool surfaced contextual hints, recommendations, and educational messages tailored to the user’s inputs. Some were general facts about emissions and air quality, while others dynamically responded to the scenarios users created within the tool.

This helped transform the experience from a simple calculator into a more effective behavioural learning tool.

Technical implementation

We built the platform using Nuxt.js and deployed it as a fully static application, allowing it to remain lightweight, fast, and inexpensive to maintain.

Removing the need for a traditional backend significantly reduced technical overhead. There were no databases, user accounts, or authentication systems to manage, helping keep the experience frictionless for users and straightforward for the client to maintain.

To support lead generation and engagement, we implemented a lightweight integration using embedded Google Forms that allowed businesses to contact Cross River Partnership directly and express interest in sustainability support services.

Outcome and impact

Transport Emissions London provided businesses with a far more accessible way to understand and explore the environmental consequences of their transport behaviours.

By combining trusted emissions data with a simple and highly interactive experience, the platform encouraged users to experiment, learn, and make more informed decisions around transport and sustainability.

Most importantly, the tool demonstrated how thoughtful digital product design can make complex environmental data feel practical, understandable, and actionable for everyday users.
