Understanding the challenge
The Goethe-Institut operates a global network dedicated to cultural exchange, language learning, and international collaboration.
With social media activity spread across numerous countries and platforms, understanding overall performance was becoming increasingly difficult. Individual teams could access platform-specific analytics, but there was no consistent way to compare performance across the organisation or identify opportunities for improvement.
Having seen the impact of the social media monitoring platform we delivered for the British Council, the Goethe-Institut approached us to create a similar solution tailored to its own requirements.
The challenge was not simply to collect data. It was to transform fragmented social media activity into meaningful insights that could support both local teams and strategic decision-makers.Building on a proven foundation
Rather than starting from scratch, we were able to build upon the foundations of the British Council Social Monitor, reducing delivery risk and accelerating development.
While both platforms shared a common foundation, the Goethe-Institut platform was adapted to support different social media channels, reporting requirements, workflows, and organisational priorities. The user experience and visual design were also tailored to align with the Goethe-Institut's internal systems and brand.
This approach allowed the organisation to benefit from years of learning and refinement while still receiving a platform designed around its specific needs.
Designing for adoption
A key consideration throughout the project was ensuring the platform became part of everyday workflows rather than another reporting tool that staff occasionally visited.
To support this, the dashboard was integrated directly into the Goethe-Institut's intranet, making it easily accessible to teams across the organisation.
The interface prioritised clarity and ease of use, allowing users to quickly understand channel performance, compare results across regions, and identify successful content without needing specialist analytics knowledge.
The goal was simple: make social media performance easier to understand and easier to act upon.Delivery and collaboration
The project required balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders across an international organisation.
Some users needed high-level strategic reporting, while others wanted practical insights they could apply to their day-to-day social media activity. Through close collaboration and iterative delivery, we created a reporting framework that worked effectively across both contexts.
By focusing on usability and relevance rather than overwhelming users with data, the platform provided a consistent and trusted source of insight across the organisation.Outcome and impact
The Goethe-Institut Social Monitor transformed how the organisation understood and evaluated its global social media activity.
By bringing multiple platforms and channels into a single reporting environment, the platform made performance data more accessible, comparable, and actionable. Teams gained greater visibility into what was working, where engagement was strongest, and how social media could better support organisational objectives.
Most importantly, the project turned fragmented reporting into a shared understanding of performance across a global organisation.
