A website redesign and rebrand that helped Open Rights Group better showcase its campaigns, strengthen its identity, and encourage more people to become supporters.

The Open Rights Group needed a website that better reflected the importance of its work defending digital rights, privacy, and free speech online. While the organisation had built a strong reputation and active supporter base, its website was not effectively communicating its campaigns or encouraging visitors to get involved. We led a rebrand and website rebuild focused on making campaigns more visible, strengthening calls to action, and creating a more engaging experience for both new and existing supporters.

Key results

3,000+ supporters
Active grassroots community
Campaign-focused design
Increased visibility of key initiatives
Modern publishing platform
Built using WordPress Gutenberg

Understanding the challenge

The Open Rights Group operates in a space where public awareness and engagement are critical to success.

The organisation campaigns on issues including privacy, surveillance, free speech, and digital rights, often responding to complex and rapidly evolving policy debates. While its work was highly respected, the existing website was not doing enough to communicate the breadth of its campaigns or encourage visitors to become active supporters.

The challenge was to create a website that felt more confident, more engaging, and more effective at converting interest into action.

Refreshing the brand

The redesign began with a broader visual refresh.

We developed a bolder and more contemporary identity that reflected both the seriousness of the issues Open Rights Group campaigns on and the energy of its grassroots movement.

The aim was not to reinvent the organisation, but to create a stronger and more recognisable digital presence that better communicated its purpose and values.

This new visual direction provided the foundation for the wider website redesign.

Designing for engagement

A key focus of the project was making campaigns easier to discover and engage with.

We designed new content components that allowed the organisation to highlight active campaigns more prominently throughout the site. New call-to-action blocks encouraged visitors to support campaigns, join the organisation, or take part in specific activities.

Rather than treating content and conversion as separate goals, we integrated them into a single user journey that helped visitors understand the issues while making it easier to take action.

The result was a website that better reflected how campaigning organisations actually build and maintain support.

Building a platform for growth

The website was rebuilt using WordPress and the Gutenberg editor, providing the Open Rights Group team with a far more flexible publishing platform.

Custom content blocks gave editors greater control over how campaigns, news, and calls to action were presented, reducing reliance on developers and making it easier for the team to respond quickly to emerging issues.

This flexibility was particularly important for an organisation whose priorities and campaigns can change rapidly in response to developments in technology and policy.

Outcome and impact

The new website gave Open Rights Group a stronger platform for communicating its work and engaging supporters.

Campaigns became more visible, calls to action more prominent, and content easier to manage. The refreshed brand and improved user experience helped create a clearer connection between the organisation's mission and the actions visitors could take to support it.

Most importantly, the project created a digital platform capable of supporting the organisation's growth and campaigning ambitions for years to come.
